Framing
Having finished the demolition, now comes the framing stage. This step is not a mandatory step for bathroom remodeling process. A remodeling project may very likely be without framing whatsoever, except for a simple recess shampoo shelf, or a shower bench.
So when is the framing step necessary?
Basically, that depends on the project itself. The desire of the homeowner for specifics will determine if framing is necessary or not.
When installing a tub, it can be a skirt tub or a drop-in tub. A skirt tub means it has one side closed with the same material the tub is made of, be it acrylic, fiberglass, or cast iron. A drop in tub has all sides around open, and it is actually "dropped" into a framing structure. Usually, a drop-in tub is installed if the homeowner wants to have a tile in front of the tub instead of a ready made tub skirt.
Framing is also required when building a pony wall, which is a half high wall, usually built to block a toilet on one side, separate tub and shower areas, or simply for design purpose.
A shower bench is also framed, if the homeowner wish one. A shower bench could be either corner bench or a full cube bench. That depends if the homeowner wishes to have a ready made shower door at the end, or a custom made one.
Another example for framing is recess shampoo shelf, built inside the walls to make some room for shampoo bottle and soap. Another framing could be soffit, if the owner wish it, a new wall, pocket door, new size bathroom entrance door, new construction window, step, and other things that can come along during design process.
More major framing examples are If the homeowner wishes to build a new closet inside the bathroom area, or add a new shower to a tub only bathroom.
All the above are standard framing projects, which can be done during the remodeling process relatively easy, and could take any time between a ten minutes to a couple of days, depend on which of the above we are dealing with.
However, some framing could take a much larger portion of the work time, and naturally cost more. If a homeowner wishes to enlarge the bathroom by moving the wall separating between the bathroom and the bedroom by 2 feet into the bedroom, then the process begins to take more time. If this wall is a load bearing wall, more framing will be required to replace the existing support from the wall, and this will have to be done with the approval of an engineer, which will take more time and money.
